Submitting Grades for Spring 2023

The Spring 2023 grading period opens Friday, April 28, at 8:00 a.m. and closes Monday, May 8, at 12:00 p.m. There are many online resources available to help faculty and staff who enter final grades.

1. Use these instructions to finalize gradebooks. The instructions will help ensure that the grades displayed in Canvas matches what is sent to ONE.UF.

2. The UF Human Resources’ Grades Toolkit provides excellent instructional video and PDFs for faculty and staff who enter grades in ONE.UF and myUFL.

3. UFIT has a 50-minute webinar available that covers finalizing a gradebook and sending grades to ONE.UF through Canvas. Faculty and staff can also request a consultation with e-Learning Support staff for assistance with sending their gradebook to ONE.UF.

4. For questions regarding UF’s e-Learning environment, please do not hesitate to contact learning-support@ufl.edu. For questions about entering grades in ONE.UF faculty and staff should contact the Office of the University Registrar, grades@registrar.ufl.edu.

Falling for a Phish Can Lead to an MFA Bombing Attack

Phishing attacks are frequently carried out through emails or texts that appear to come from a reputable source. Cybercriminals are skilled at using deceitful tactics to trick users into revealing personal information such as logins or credit card information. Common phishing tactics include:

• Unsolicited work opportunities that lead to requests for bank routing information, or ask the new “employee” to purchase supplies, with the promise of reimbursement
• Messages warning of an imminent deactivation of your accounts, such as bank accounts, social media accounts, or subscription services
• Emails allegedly from the IRS, FBI, or other federal agency threatening legal action, and directing you to imposter websites requiring you to enter personally identifying information
• Urgent requests from fake email accounts impersonating a high-level person in your organization, asking you to purchase gift cards or submit your credit card information.

Pay close attention to any email asking for GatorLink login credentials. Unauthorized access to your GatorLink account can expose your personal or academic information. Once a GatorLink login is compromised, the attacker may repeatedly spam Duo Push requests to your device — otherwise known as “MFA Bombing” — hoping you will accept just to make the requests stop. Approving an unexpected Duo request gives the criminal access to your account. Visit the MFA bombing webpage to learn more about this form of cyberattack.

AI Resources for Students Spotlighted at 2023 Tech Fair

More than 2,030 student interactions were one outcome of the 2023 Tech Fair. Another outcome is that many students learned about some of the technology resources and services available to them at UFIT’s largest outreach event. Veronica Rams is a student who stopped by the event.

“GitHub Web Flow is so cool and useful when it comes to learning how to make a good website, since learning HTML was a bit hard,” Rams said.

This year’s Tech Fair focused on helping students utilize AI and online tools while completing their undergraduate degrees to help them achieve their academic and professional goals. Students learned how to use LinkedIn Learning’s Learning Paths, tried out new AI drawing software with the help of UFIT’s instructional designers, and got their tech issues solved from the expert staff in the UFIT Help Desk tent. Students also also learned how AI evaluates their resumes, courtesy of the Career Connections Center. Marston Science Library brought out 3D printers and rentable technologies available. Victoria Garcia, an Innovation Academy student, appreciated the display.

Expert Help with Thesis and Dissertation Submissions

The UFIT Help Desk staff includes the Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Support team (ETD), whose expertise can save you a lot of time and heartache. The ETD team’s goal is to help graduate students throughout the process of formatting their thesis or dissertation according to UF Graduate Editorial Office’s guidelines, and do so within a friendly and supportive environment. They also maintain Word and LaTex templates to use in the production of these documents. Dates to know for the Fall 2022 semester are:

Sep. 16: Degree Application
Sep. 30: Doctoral Dissertation Submission
Oct. 26: Master’s Thesis Submission
Nov. 18: Final Submission (all ETD students)
Dec. 17: Final Clearance
Jan. 6: Clear Prior (to the upcoming term)

The week leading up to each deadline is extremely busy, so students should plan ahead and make appointments as soon as they can. Students can also call (352-392-HELP/4357, and select option 5) or visit 132 Hub (between Starbucks and the UF International Center) to schedule an appointment.

Tech Support for All Gators

Whether you are in Gainesville, Lake Nona, Leesburg, The Villages®, UF Scripps Biomedical Research, UF Health-Jax, or an IFAS extension or research center, IT support is just a call or service ticket away.

The UFIT Help Desk provides 24/7 support for account resets and more. Centrally located on the Main campus in 132 Hub, the UF community can get help with VPN access, GatorLink authentication issues, applications within myUFL and ONE.UF, as well as thesis/dissertation support.

IFAS IT enables extension services and agricultural research around the state with technical experts who understand the needs and programs used by IFAS faculty and staff. IFAS IT has an excellent, resource-filled website you can peruse or click the Get Help Now! button to submit a ticket.

The UF Health IT department provides support for clinical applications, like the Epic tool. They also provide expert assistance with instructional technologies, IT Training, videoconferencing needs, SharePoint, myTraining, and for telemedicine issues.

The Scripps Help Desk offers onsite technical support for the scientists, students, and staff at UF Scripps Biomedical Research. Contact them (scrps-fltech@mail.ufl.edu) for assistance with system access issues, technical support, or to order A/V services.

Maximize Wi-Fi Experience On Campus

Eduroam is the campus Wi-Fi network option for students, faculty, and staff with active GatorLink credentials.

Instead of connecting to ufguest — an unencrypted, basic option for visitors — members of the UF community should connect to eduroam for the fastest and most secure experience. Ufguest users have a slower internet speed, can’t use Gatorlink VPN, and are unable to connect to UF’s private IP network. Follow these steps to make eduroam your default Wi-Fi when in range:

1) Open your Wi-Fi settings and connect to the “ufgetonline” network
2) Open a new browser window and visit getonline.ufl.edu to register your device
3) Select your device type from the dropdown
4) Follow instructions until you’re able to connect
     a. Note that you must use your “gatorlink@ufl.edu” as the username
5) Once connected, open your network settings again and forget the “ufgetonline” network

When you change your GatorLink password, you will need to follow steps 1-5 again on each device you have previously connected to eduroam. Call the UFIT Help Desk (352-392-HELP/4357) or visit the Help Desk (132 Hub) during business hours for assistance connecting to eduroam.

2022 UFIT Help Desk Flyer
Besides updating services and support available, the UF Computing Help Desk flyer also sports a new, alternative name: the UFIT Help Desk. Both names are still correct, but the UFIT Help Desk is a modernized nickname that has become a common reference…so we’ve built the nickname into the 2022 flyer graphics.

2022 HiPerGator Trifold Brochure
The 2022 HiPerGator trifold brochure was developed for use inside the UF Data Center (UFDC). Getting a tour of the UFDC and HiPerGator Room has become a significant component of the research faculty recruiting process. The new trifold brochure gives potential faculty hires, along with state government officials and other constituents visiting the data center, an updated accounting of the compute power, number of cores available, storage, and speed of HiPerGator 3.0 and AI.
