Fall 2022 HiPerGator Training

Registration for the fall 2022 Research Computing training schedule is now open. The training sessions will be held on Thursdays from 10:40 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. And for the first time, this semester UFIT is offering both in-person registration and Zoom attendance options for each training.

The in-person location is the
UF Informatics Institute Seminar Room. All sessions are open to faculty, lab staff, and undergraduate and graduate students. Please register by 9:00 a.m. on the day of the training to ensure you receive the Zoom link. Sessions will be recorded and posted on Research Computing’s pre-recorded training page. Fall 2022 HiPerGator Symposium

The fifth annual Fall HiPerGator Symposium will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1. The symposium will be held virtually via Zoom and consist of three parts: a keynote presentation, 10-minute ‘lightning’ talks, and poster sessions. Dr. Bala Balachandar, Newton C. Ebaugh Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, will deliver the keynote presentation. The full Symposium agenda is available online.

The symposium is open to everyone in the UF community and to research faculty in the state university system and Southeastern Conference member institutions. Register to attend here.

All postdocs, undergraduates, and graduate students can submit to present a lightning talk or a poster. The fall symposium focuses on high-performance and high-throughput computing, leveraging HiPerGator 3.0 and its storage systems. While AI applications may be considered, the spring symposium focuses specifically on AI. Visit the event registration page to submit a proposal for a lightning talk or a poster. → Applications to be a presenter must be received by October 14.

Two New UFIT Brochures for Campus

UFIT has new brochures on two of our most popular services.

2022 UFIT Help Desk Flyer
Besides updating services and support available, the UF Computing Help Desk flyer also sports a new, alternative name: the UFIT Help Desk. Both names are still correct, but the UFIT Help Desk is a modernized nickname that has become a common reference…so we’ve built the nickname into the 2022 flyer graphics.

2022 HiPerGator Trifold Brochure
The 2022 HiPerGator trifold brochure was developed for use inside the UF Data Center (UFDC). Getting a tour of the UFDC and HiPerGator Room has become a significant component of the research faculty recruiting process. The new trifold brochure gives potential faculty hires, along with state government officials and other constituents visiting the data center, an updated accounting of the compute power, number of cores available, storage, and speed of HiPerGator 3.0 and AI.

State Faculty Presenting at Spring HiPerGator Symposium

Registration is now open for the Spring 2022 HiPerGator Symposium. The symposium will be held virtually (hosted on Zoom) and showcase the research in artificial intelligence being conducted by faculty and students from the University of Florida and researchers utilizing HiPerGator from institutions in the Sunshine State Education & Research Computing Alliance (SSERCA).

The date and time for the symposium is Thursday, Mar. 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There will be more than a dozen presenters, including:

Jayantha Obeysekera, Florida International University [“Understanding, Prediction, and Modeling of Flooding due to Sea Level Variability in Coastal Regions Using Data Mining and AI Methods”]
Sudeep Sarkar, University of South Florida [“Scaling Up Computer Vision Algorithms for Image and Event Recognition”]

The full list of presenters will be available on the spring symposium webpage. Students, faculty, and staff of Florida institutions, as well as Southeastern Conference universities and national constituents, may register to attend. Registrants will receive the Zoom link and sign-in information prior to the symposium. Sharing UF’s AI Journey with the World

Enhancements to UF’s https://ai.ufl.edu/ website (AI) debuted on January 26. The site now more fully showcases UF’s commitment to integrate AI across academic, research, and outreach efforts. The Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing partnered with UFIT’s Web Services to bring about the site enhancements.

“The story we want to share digitally is one that encompasses all aspects of AI at UF,” notes Melanie Schramm, assistant vice president for strategic communications. “UF’s AI Initiative touches on every aspect of the university. Working with UFIT, this site will help us share information and discoveries with stakeholders around the world.”

The new design features a restructured homepage with content blocks dedicated to university-wide research and announcements. Two new tabs have been added: the Industry tab details UF’s investments in solidifying its role as the first “AI University,” while the News tab lists updates and events from departments and units. Students can also check out the chart on the Academics tab that lists all new and enhanced undergraduate and graduate courses that include AI components. The popular Calendar link lists the symposia, trainings, webinars, and other events focusing on AI across the enterprise. UF Human Resources also has a Jobs page dedicated solely to the AI-focused faculty and staff positions available with the university.
