Progress Towards the 2020-25 Strategic Plan for IT

The 2020-2021 Contributions Report is now available online.

“This annual report covers July 2020 through June 2021, an extraordinary period of change and challenge,” said VP and CIO Elias Eldayrie. “I am extremely proud of the way our staff not only contributed to the university’s effort to combat COVID-19, but also that we could still support the campus with more than 300 completed projects and enhancements during this time period.”

UFIT is deeply committed to improving UF’s customer experience. Investing in new and innovative ways of delivering campus support is a primary focus for the work underway to achieve the goals outlined in the University of Florida’s Strategic Plan for IT: 2020-2025. Anyone with comments about the publication may send them to UFIT Communications.

Two New UFIT Brochures for Campus

UFIT has new brochures on two of our most popular services.

2022 UFIT Help Desk Flyer
Besides updating services and support available, the UF Computing Help Desk flyer also sports a new, alternative name: the UFIT Help Desk. Both names are still correct, but the UFIT Help Desk is a modernized nickname that has become a common reference…so we’ve built the nickname into the 2022 flyer graphics.

2022 HiPerGator Trifold Brochure
The 2022 HiPerGator trifold brochure was developed for use inside the UF Data Center (UFDC). Getting a tour of the UFDC and HiPerGator Room has become a significant component of the research faculty recruiting process. The new trifold brochure gives potential faculty hires, along with state government officials and other constituents visiting the data center, an updated accounting of the compute power, number of cores available, storage, and speed of HiPerGator 3.0 and AI.

UF to Lead Southeastern Conference-AI Collaboration

The Southeastern Conference’s (SEC) universities have launched an artificial intelligence and data science initiative. Through the SEC Artificial Intelligence Consortium, universities will share educational resources, certificate and degree program structures, and online seminars and courses. The 14 member institutions will jointly promote faculty, staff, and student workshops and conferences and seek mutual partnerships with industry. Additionally, the schools will share best practices on how to ensure students graduate with the AI and data science skills needed to prepare them for the global workforce.

The University of Florida is leading this effort and will provide HiPerGator access to SEC schools. Dr. Joseph Glover, UF’s provost and senior VP for academic affairs, is chair of the SEC provosts group. Glover said of higher education leading the AI disruption:

“AI is changing nearly every sector of society, and the SEC is uniquely positioned to engage students, faculty, and staff in one of the most transformational opportunities of our time. The combined strength of our institutions gives us the opportunity to advance in how we process the future of teaching and learning, research and economic development and how we can provide leadership at this critical moment when AI and data science are changing the way we think about small tasks and big questions.”

Creating Opportunities in Our Community

In summer 2021, UFIT reached out to Santa Fe College to initiate a partnership for students from populations underrepresented in technology fields. This new internship program provides hands-on work experience and mentoring by UFIT staff. Eight interns began their work experience this fall, and three–Joseph, Lauren, and Jerrell–chose to intern with UF’s Information Security Office. Here’s a brief look at our information security interns:

Joseph who has already earned his A.S. in Network Security, has learned a lot thus far, including how the risk assessment process works and the security aspects of firewalls.
“I learned how to categorize risk assessments. Risk assessments help with security because you are looking from the outside in and it gives you better insight when analyzing how data flows through the network.”

Programming major Lauren wants to become a QA engineer. She likes testing and making sure apps are secure and accessible to everyone, especially those with special needs. “I am very grateful for this internship and appreciate how patient everyone is as I learn new tools like T4. I want to try to help everyone because I know technology can be difficult for some.”

Information Systems Security major Jerrell plans on earning a master’s in cybersecurity information assurance and then work in penetration testing. He has gained much from this internship: “I’ve learned a lot about HIPAA and FERPA compliance, and enjoy sitting in with the monitoring team, which is an area I’m interested in professionally. ISO staff have given me career advice, and I appreciate them pushing and guiding me into my purpose.”

Elevating the Stakeholder Experience

Vice President and CIO Elias Eldayrie continues to evolve UFIT and align staff to help UF rise to five and achieve the 2020-2025 UF Strategic Plan for IT goals. In July, Eldayrie announced a new department–Customer Experience and Resource Planning–and elevated Alicia Turner to be its director. As director, Ms. Turner, now reporting to the CIO, will serve as the chief advocate for the UF community.

“I am so excited and truly honored by this opportunity to serve UF in this new way,” said Turner. “Based on my previous roles on campus, I was exposed firsthand to the many opportunities where technology can innovate the work we do to support UF’s mission. As director of Customer Experience and Resource Planning, I am truly fortunate to be in a position where I can integrate the stakeholder voice into UFIT’s work.”

Ms. Turner is known for her efforts to bring people together from different departments and colleges to successfully collaborate on university projects. Contributions include facilitating proposal development for three large-scale National Institutes of Health awards, resulting in a combined $44 million for UF. Turner will provide strategic leadership through her extensive knowledge of campus business processes and relationships built over her 20+ years with the university. The initial groups reorganized into UFIT’s Customer Experience and Resource Planning are the project management office and the business relationship managers. Anyone with questions about the new department is welcome to contact Alicia Turner.

Infusing AI Into the Undergraduate Experience

According to a study by Gartner, artificial intelligence (AI) job creation will reach two million net-new jobs in 2025. To prepare graduates for an AI-enabled workforce, UF has begun integrating AI across the curriculum. Every student now has the opportunity to develop a competency in AI regardless of their field of study.

Several new and existing courses include AI in their syllabi. The UF AI website provides a list of all AI-related majors, minors, and courses. Students can also complete a certificate in AI Fundamentals and Applications. The program is available for undergraduates of all majors, and requires a fundamentals course, an ethics course, and one college-specific course.

To learn about applications of AI across the university, students can attend seminars, workshops, and other events. The Center for Undergraduate Research (CUR) is hosting a virtual Artificial Intelligence in Research workshop on April 14, from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Denisse Ventura, one of the CUR ambassadors organizing the event, said that all current undergraduates could benefit from understanding AI:

“Not only would students be equipped with skills that can make them more competitive in the job market, but they would also bring unique perspectives that can better diversify the growing research area.”

Our Purpose. Our Legacy.

On behalf of the staff of UFIT, it is with great excitement that we share the University of Florida 2020-2025 Strategic Plan for IT with Gator Nation! This five-year plan outlines how UFIT will support the university as it transforms to a national leadership role in the application of AI in higher education, including an expansive plan to elevate research, teaching, and economic development. The plan is built around six goals:

1. Enable Student Success
2. Empower the Future of Research
3. Accelerate Philanthropic Impact
4. Elevate the Stakeholder Experience
5. Advance an Analytics-Enabled Environment
6. Build a Resilient Cybersecurity Environment

We gratefully acknowledge the hundreds of faculty, students, and staff who gave their time to assist in the formation of the University of Florida 2020-2025 Strategic Plan for IT. While the plan was under development, the U.S. has been grappling with a global pandemic and addressing racial equality and social justice, important causes on campus and in our community. These issues are also addressed in the plan, with actionable items included as part of UFIT’s objectives. Anyone with questions about the plan or who would like to provide feedback is welcome to send their comments to VP and CIO Elias Eldayrie.
