Free Storage and Collaboration Tools

Access to cloud-based collaboration tools has been essential for UF’s successful transition to hybrid campus life. In case you didn’t know, all students, faculty, and staff with active GatorLink credentials can get UF-Dropbox, G-Suite, and OneDrive from the GatorCloud. The advantage to using the versions UFIT provides is that you get an additional layer of security with your UF account and unlimited Dropbox and Google Drive storage! There is a very helpful chart on the GatorCloud homepage outlining what you get with each service. UFIT also recently published a new video overview of GatorCloud services.

In addition to UF-Dropbox, G-Suite, and OneDrive, GatorCloud also includes Office 365 and GatorMail. Want to learn how to make the most of these apps? Take advantage of your free LinkedIn Learning account to watch just in time training, like “Google Apps: Tips, Tricks and Techniques“, and “Team Collaboration in Office 365.”

Anyone in the UF community with questions about using GatorCloud applications or help accessing LinkedIn Learning for free may contact the UF Computing Help Desk (352-392-HELP/4357, helpdesk@ufl.edu).

Highest Attendance Yet for Tech Fair

Schedule an event about tech services at UF and they will come: There were 4,566 student interactions recorded at the 2020 Tech Fair! Students asked for advice on topics ranging from two-factor authentication, how to earn badges with
LinkedIn Learning and details on the expanded list of items available for checkout at Marston.

“I learned about a lot of services today, and I am so excited that SolidWorks is in UFApps!” said Sophie Williams, a freshman biological engineering major. “It was also interesting to learn about the part-time IT job opportunities on campus. It’s just so great to be at UF and a part of this!”

2020 marks the sixth year of Tech Fair and included two new focuses: Advertising the campus tech jobs that students could apply for on the spot, and serving as an introduction to IT support and services for Innovation Academy students, who are on campus for the spring and summer terms. Photos from the 2020 Student Tech Fair will be posted on UFIT’s Facebook page and the raffle prize winners will be notified on Monday, Jan 27. Anyone with questions about the event is welcome to contact UFIT Communications.

Anti-Plagiarism Service Available for Faculty and Graduate Students

Combing through thousands of thesis pages takes time and effort, but iThenticate can detect plagiarism in less than a minute.

The iThenticate anti-plagiarism service is available free for faculty and graduate students through UFIT’s campus-wide contract. Ithenticate scans documents word by word, cross-checking them with a database of more than 34 billion archived Web pages, 92 million published works, and 36 million scholarly articles. Many government organizations use Ithenticate to review funding proposals and documents, including the NIH, NSF, and the EPA.

Since the iThenticate service “went live” at UF in 2011, nearly 2,000 documents totaling 17,679 pages have been submitted for evaluation. To use, go to the LSS website, open Research Tools, click on iThenticate, and click on Request an Account. After the completed form is submitted, a member of the e-Learning staff will set up an account and notify the requester, typically within 24 hours of the request.

Turnitin, an anti-plagiarism service for undergraduate coursework review, is also available. Email UFIT’s e-Learning Support Services team with your questions about iThenticate or any other online learning support need.

■ Microsoft Office 2013
■ Microsoft Office 2010
■ Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac

Free software downloads are available to all enrolled undergraduate, graduate, law, and medical students. Visit e-academy’s On The Hub site to initiate a download or learn more about the program. Free e-academy downloads are supported directly by e-academy’s On The Hub support team.

The UF Computing Help Desk Wiki has very useful information on using the On The Hub service. Look under: FAQ Topics > Software & Licenses > How Do I Use… doc. It is recommended that students review this “how-to” document prior to downloading.

Students can also purchase MS Office for $15 at four campus locations: the UF Computing Help Desk in the HUB, and at the Reitz Union, UFHealth, and Levin College of Law Bookstores. Students that utilize On The Hub to download MS Office online are not be eligible to purchase a physical copy for $15.
