Accessibility Issues on Social Media

A 2018 report states that 57 million people in the U.S. have a disability. With the rise of social media usage for communicating academic and other important UF information, employing some accessibility guidelines can be helpful in keeping UF ADA compliant:

1. Be easy to reach
Include your department, organization, or office information in the bio section on your social media channel. Make it simple for users to contact you with questions in an easy-to-find location.

2. Be consistent and redundant
While everyone has their primary or favorite social media platform, posting redundant content across social media platforms is a best practice. Social media channels differ in navigational difficulty depending on a person’s physical limitations.

3. Be uncomplicated in language and terminology
Keep your language simple! Use acronyms and abbreviations sparingly on social media.

4. Be considerate
Think before you post: Use Alt text, text descriptions, captioning, and/or other text components as often as possible when posting visuals or audio files online.
