Quick Tutorials for UF Email, Wi-Fi

UFIT’s YouTube channel is robust with information and how-to tips on a variety of topics. Since two of the most popular reasons for contacting the UF Computing Help Desk are UF email (GatorMail) and Wi-Fi (eduroam), we’ve curated some of the videos and online documentation available on these topics. So, while you are preparing to teach a class, taking a study break, or waiting for an RTS bus, watch a video or review a how-to doc. And remember, if you ever need assistance with GatorMail or connecting to UF’s eduroam network, just call, visit, or email the IT Help Desk. The Help Desk is available seven days a week!

Storage Transition for Graduating Gators

As commencement draws near, graduating students should prepare to separate from campus IT services. This includes content stored in UF GatorCloud apps and UFApps, as well as GatorMail. Students separating from the university transition to alumni status 365 days after their last semester taking classes. While you prepare to graduate, make time to move files before your access becomes limited.

GatorCloud: Files saved to UF OneDrive, Google Suite, and/or Dropbox services are accessible for up to 365 days after graduation. Relocate your files to a personal storage location to avoid losing important information.
UFApps: UFApps is not intended to be a long-term storage solution. Be sure to save any coursework files you want to keep to a personal external storage system before leaving UF.
GatorMail: GatorMail: After 365 days, graduating students are no longer eligible for GatorMail. Using your GatorMail address for third-party accounts will cause access problems, so change your login address to another email account.

Contact the UFIT Help Desk (352-392-HELP/4357) for assistance with any of service transitions listed here. Congratulations to the class of 2022, and Go Gators!

Tech Resolutions For a Safer 2022

Staying cyber secure is a great new year resolution that won’t have you counting calories or committing to more exercise!  By adopting some of the resolutions below, the UF community can make a huge difference to their overall cybersecurity safety (also known as your “security posture”).  Enhance your cyber footprint security by:

  1. Changing compromised passwords and creating different passwords for each account. Check for compromised passwords at https://haveibeenpwned.com.
  2. Activating multi-factor authentication (MFA) on critical accounts like email, banking, and social media. Find which sites you use support MFA by visiting https://2fa.directory.
  3. Deleting old social media accounts and other accounts you no longer use.
  4. Reviewing privacy and security settings annually on social media accounts and other sites at least once a year.
  5. Removing unused apps from mobile devices. Unused apps are like unused accounts–they store information that can be used against you if they’re compromised.
  6. Creating a guest network for visitors to your home. If you have smart devices like Ring or Nest, consider creating a guest network for those items. Then if the smart devices get compromised, your home network will still be protected.
  7. Thoroughly delete (“wipe”) all electronic devices before donating or disposing, or have them shredded by a trusted vendor. UF Surplus manages the secure disposal of electronic media and electronic waste of university technology.

For more ways to be cybersafe in 2022,  check out the email safety and computer protection boxes on UF’s Information Security Office website homepage.

Change Coming to Email Login Experience

Modern Authentication will be enabled for supported email clients on Sunday, Sept. 26. This change is necessary to strengthen UF’s security posture: “Modern Auth” provides a more secure login experience and allows usage of multi-factor authentication for supported email clients.

How Does This Change the User Experience?
Anyone who uses an email client that supports Modern Auth will initially see a change in their login experience. After Sept. 26, users will receive a prompt similar to the login.ufl.edu webpage. Users of MS Teams, or the Outlook for iOS/Android login procedure, will be familiar with this new experience. When Modern Auth is implemented, users will also validate with multi-factor authentication. Once successfully authenticated, users will not be prompted for a password again until:

1. Their GatorLink password is changed or expires.
2. Their supported email client is inactive for more than 90 days.

What is NOT happening?
Basic authentication is NOT being disabled. UF email clients using basic authentication (e.g., IMAP and older versions of Outlook) will continue to work as expected.

Whenever a change is made to email, there is always a concern that someone may inadvertently fall victim to email scams intended to steal UF login credentials. Anyone with questions or concerns about the legitimacy of an email should contact the UF Computing Help Desk (132 HUB, helpdesk@ufl.edu, 352-392-HELP/4357).
