Adobe, Target, Yahoo, Uber, LinkedIn, and now Facebook. These familiar names have something else in common besides being major U.S. corporations: According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, they are among the companies with the largest data breaches on record. Did you know there’s a way to find out if your email accounts and potentially your passwords are on the dark web?
“Have I Been Pwned?” is a free resource to check if your email addresses have been put at risk due to an online account been compromised or “pwned”(rhymes with owned) in a data breach. This is just one of the tips you can learn by attending Tech Fair and visiting with members of UF’s Information Security Office (ISO). ISO staff will be available to talk about the latest breaches, phishing attempts at UF, importance of encryption, and ways to protect yourself, your money, your privacy, and your reputation.
The 2018 Student Tech Fair is Wednesday, Oct. 10, on the North Lawn of Reitz Union. Follow the signs and look for the balloon arch. You’ll learn about tech services at UF, bag some freebies, and maybe win an iPod or AirPads!
