Project to Improve Cell Phone Coverage For Shands and AHC Underway

Dental Science Building

UFIT continues the build-out of the Distributed Antenna System (DAS) for many parts of campus.

Design of the DAS serving the UF&Shands and the Academic Health Center (AHC) is complete and installation is now underway. The following buildings are included in this phase of the project:

     • Shands at UF General Services Building
     • Shands at UF Main Building
     • Shands Cancer Hospital
     • Human Development Building
     • Academic Research Building
     • Stetson Medical Science Building
     • Bio Medical Building
     • Basic Sciences Building
     • Dental Science Building

There will be staggered start-dates to come online, but these nine buildings should all be completed by October 1, 2013. It typically takes two to three months of optimization (“tweaking”) to finalize coverage once on-air. Additional buildings at UF&Shands and AHC are currently under design and targeted for on-air activation by the end of 2013.

The DAS project to enhance cell coverage at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium was completed in time for UF’s first home game in 2012. AT&T is adding LTE (4G) coverage for the stadium over the summer. Verizon is currently designing their infrastructure so they can be added to the stadium DAS sometime this fall.

The DAS build-out of UF’s main campus should be completed by May, 2014. For additional information about DAS projects at UF, please email UFIT Communications.
