Better Wireless Connectivity For Campus – Coming Soon

Neutral-Host Distributed Antenna System

To assist with the growing demand for Mobile connectivity, a new distributed antenna system (DAS) is being installed on campus. This system will be “vendor neutral”, meaning it will work for all Mobile services (e.g., Verizon, Spring, T-Mobile, Virgin, etc.)

A DAS is an in-building, wireless device that allows better cellular reception. The system will increase performance capabilities and allow more users to place and receive calls, texts, and data attachments simultaneously. The unified distributed antenna system also makes it easier for UFIT staff to manage the wireless needs of the university.

In fall 2010, a project was launched to install a ‘neutral host’ DAS, allowing service from all wireless providers to be carried to campus. The first portion of the project will cover Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Installation for the stadium DAS begins this month, with completion expected prior to the first Gator football game of the 2012 season.

Meanwhile, AT&T Mobility is designing the DAS system for many other buildings on campus, including the new East Campus Office Building, Shands&UF buildings, Innovation Hub, the Libraries (West and Smathers) and the O’Connell Center. The anticipated project timeline to cover the entire campus is two years.
