Top IT Skills Needed in 2014

End-User Support at Help Desk

The results are in and things are looking good for IT professionals: according to Computerworld’s annual Forecast survey, 32 percent of companies are expecting to increase their number of IT professionals in 2014. Companies report these eight IT skills are the most sought-after:

1. Programming/Application Development
2. Help Desk/Technical Support
3. Networking
4. Mobile Applications and Device Management
5. Project Management
6. Database Administration
7. Security
8. Business Intelligence/Analytics

For two years in a row, programming and application development has ranked number one. The unemployment rate for software developers, just 1.8 percent, is among the lowest in the country for any profession. Technical support ranked second, largely because of an increase in company-provided web services. Networking came in third, up five places from last year due to the ever-increasing need for wireless connectivity.
