Student Affairs IT Develops Timekeeping App

Help desk fixing an issue

Jeffrey Schmidt, IT Specilaist at the Reitz Union, saw an opportunity to increase efficiency and save money by improving the timekeeping process for the hundreds of student employees at the Reitz Union. myReitz is a secure web app that allows hourly employees to punch in and out in real time, view hours worked, track their status in required university training, and check out uniforms and equipment. Instead of engaging a third party to provide software that met only some of the division’s requirements and came pre-loaded with unnecessary features, the Reitz Union team developed their own web app.

Implemented in the fall of 2014, the app is projected to save $441,000 over five years. Norb Dunkel, associate vice president for Student Affairs, is very proud of this collaborative effort:
“When you think about how much money these departments have saved, and what they can do with that money, it is remarkable.”
The app became such a success that Recreational Sports asked to use it for their student employees and it was implemented by the summer of 2015.
