Saving Mileage and Staff Time: Videoconferencing

Sustainability means meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. UFIT contributes to Sustainable UF by helping the university to reduce the number of driving trips made. How? Through expansion of videoconferencing services.

Think about it…there are IFAS extension offices in all of Florida’s 67 counties. UF has research centers across the state. And in Alachua County alone there are multiple clinics, labs, and academic and administrative departments not on the university’s main campus. Whether it is a weekly staff meeting, IFAS extension services/outreach events, educational seminar, or a statewide summit, UFIT’s videoconferencing services significantly help reduce UF’s carbon footprint.

In 2011-2012, videoconferencing meant:

Trips Averted: 29,105
Driving Miles Saved: 9,572,318
CO² Reduction: 4,157 Metric Tons

In addition to the environmentally sustaining benefits, less car trips mean more productivity time, since staff aren’t spending time commuting to meetings. There is a measurable financial savings for the university as well, in reduced gas expenditures and other related travel costs.
